Watch Asian Americans: Episode 5 – Breaking Through

Join WUCF, Central Florida PBS, for a virtual video discussion via Zoom with Geeta Gandbhir, Producer of Episode 5 of the groundbreaking PBS documentary series, ASIAN AMERICANS. The series examines the significant role of Asian Americans in shaping American history and identity, from the first wave of Asian immigrants in the 1850s and identity politics during the social and cultural turmoil of the twentieth century to modern refugee crises in a globally connected world.

About Geeta Gandbhir:

Geeta Gandbhir, Producer (Episode 5), has over nineteen years of varied experience in the fields of film, television and animation. She has been nominated for three Emmy Awards, and has won two, and her films have won one Academy Award and three Peabody Awards. Recently, her film God is the Bigger Elvis with director Rebecca Cammisa was nominated for the 2012 Oscars. Her most recent works include: What’s Going On: The Life Of Marvin Gaye for PBS’ “American Masters” and Amy Rice and Alicia Sam’s feature documentary By the People: The Election of Barack Obama, executive produced by Edward Norton and released by HBO, for which she won her second Emmy Award, and Music By

Prudence, a documentary produced by HBO and Director Roger Ross Williams, which won the 2010 Oscar for Best Short Documentary. She recently completed a feature length documentary entitled Budrus by Just Vision Films, the directors and producers of the award-winning film Control Room.

 About Yog Melwani, Event Moderator:

Yog Melwani is a Commercial Real Estate Developer with two decades of extensive experience in structuring and negotiating all aspects of commercial real estate. He has transacted millions of dollars’ worth of real estate in Central Florida, which includes the development of over 320,000 square feet. . Yog is also committed to helping local businesses and his community and is currently the Appointed Chair to Mayor Buddy Dyer’s inaugural Multicultural Affairs Committee and Co-Chair for Orlando’s Walk to End Alzheimer’s. He has served on Orange County and City of Orlando boards, the Indian American Chamber of Commerce, and supported various charitable organizations, political campaigns, and area Little League.

ASIAN AMERICANS is a five-hour film series that will chronicle the contributions, and challenges of Asian Americans, the fastest growing ethnic group in America. The series examines the significant role of Asian Americans in shaping American history and identity, from the first wave of Asian immigrants in the 1850s and identity politics during the social and cultural turmoil of the twentieth century to modern refugee crises in a globally connected world. Personal histories and new academic research cast a fresh lens on U.S. history and the role Asian Americans have played in it. The series premieres on May 11 and 12.
